Mr. Ralph Gaudet lost his wife, Mme Pauline Paradis-Gaudet, two years ago at the age of 74. She passed away after a stay in a CHSLD. She was a retired nurse who was much loved by those around her. However, the last years of her life were not easy. At the age of 59, she began to experience neurological symptoms that the doctors were unable to pin down to a precise diagnosis. She suffered from spasms and muscle rigidity. At the CHSLD, Mrs. Gaudet’s physical symptoms were not taken seriously, and she was treated as if she were suffering from a psychiatric illness. Because her husband was so insistent that she be recognized as having a real health problem and treated accordingly, he too was ostracized by the medical staff and those around him. <\/div>\n
Coincidentally, after the death of his wife, Mr. Gaudet heard about SRS and mentioned it to a researcher who, after reading a description of the disease, speculated that this could possibly be the diagnosis – in retrospect. Since then, Mr. Gaudet has met two other sufferers. Comparing their stories with his wife’s, he is almost 100% certain that she did indeed suffer from SRS. <\/div>\n
Mr. Gaudet associates the photo of his beloved wife with that of Mr. Tommy Douglas, because the latter is the father of universal health care in Canada. Mr. Gaudet wants us to remember Mr. Douglas’s vision of a health care system for all that serves the sick, not a two-tier system where some are less well cared for. <\/div>\n
Mr. Gaudet’s fear is that there are other people like his wife in CHSLDs who are mistaken for being senile or having psychiatric problems, when in fact they have a rare, undiagnosed disease. He understands how difficult it is to diagnose illnesses such as Stiff Person Syndrome, which affects only one person in a million (!), but he always wonders, “If we’d known before…?”
