He was vomiting in spurts and crying a lot, he was amorphous and his skin had taken on a dark color. At around three weeks of age, we found ourselves in hospital with a severely dehydrated baby who had lost over 15% of his birth weight. He was in critical condition; his little heart was tired. The doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him; first I was told it was an allergy to my milk, then I was told his kidneys might be failing, then there was talk of a urinary tract infection and pyloric stenosis. It took four long hours to get a solution into him, and we decided to transfer him to Sainte-Justine Hospital. He was tiny in the incubator, with wires everywhere! Five staff members, including the pediatrician and an anesthetist, accompanied him in the ambulance. We were terrified we’d never see him alive again! As soon as we arrived, the emergency doctor reassured us that he was in stable condition and considered three possible scenarios… The “worst” of the three scenarios was confirmed a few hours later: congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), the classic form with salt loss. Strangely enough, we were relieved! We were told that the disease was treatable with medication and that our son would live!

Hormone therapy for life, a lot of precautions regarding infections, a few hospitalizations per year, extra vigilance and medication during illness and stress, but a very much alive child to teach us about life and make us happy!

This is what happened… We welcomed this illness as an aspect of Thomas; a peculiarity that was simply part of him. For what he taught us is that Life is an eternal struggle; not against illness, trials or the obstacles it throws at us, but against ourselves. How we face adversity determines who we choose to become, who we are. It remains a choice, I’m convinced. Thomas showed us the way… He was always strong and courageous, smiling and cheerful, even in the most difficult moments.

We now have two other sons, the youngest of whom may have a milder form; we’ve been waiting for a diagnosis for several months. He takes no medication and is doing very well.

Our youngest, also has HCS…She started treatment at 3 days old and is doing well. Thomas has also been diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and lives with various health problems in addition to HCS (anxiety, insomnia, migraines, Baker’s cysts, chronic fatigue).

We knew there was a risk with every pregnancy that our child would be affected, but we couldn’t give up all the love our children bring us! And then Thomas reassured us… He’ll be there for his little sister to show her how to take her medicine and look after her!

Stéphanie

Mother of Thomas (2001), David (2004), Éli (2009) and Jasna (2011)

renard@live.ca

For more information on congenital adrenal hyperplasia >>>>>

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia Although my first pregnancy and delivery went well, the return home was difficult; Thomas regurgitated a lot and lost weight…until one day he couldn’t keep anything down, even a few milliliters of water!
